Women’s volleyball drops two straight at ACAC championships
From Feb. 27 to March 1, the University of Alberta Augustana hosted the 2025-26 ACAC women’s volleyball championships in Camrose, Alta.
The SAIT Trojans took on provincial rival NAIT Ooks on Friday afternoon.
In the first set, the Calgary side came out strong, cruising to a 25-16 win.
The Ooks responded by winning three straight sets, taking narrow 28-26, 31-29 and 25-22 victories to secure a 3-1 win.
Trojans veteran Mia Delaquis led the offence with 17 kills on 29 attempts.
On Saturday, the Trojans faced conference rival Red Deer Polytechnic.
Red Deer narrowly won the opening set 29-27 to take an early lead.
The Queens claimed the next two sets to win the match 3-0.
With the two losses, the Trojans were eliminated from the championship Saturday.
Trojans dominate third indoor track meet
After mixed results in ACAC indoor track competition this season, the Trojans rebounded this weekend.
Hosted by the Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks, the meet marked the third Running Room Grand Prix of the season.
In the women’s 60 metres, Amy Fallows finished first, setting an ACAC record with a time of 7.89 seconds.
Isabel Vega placed fourth and Meagan Wiebe finished fifth.
The Trojans had four runners in the men’s 60 metres. Myles Sonom placed third in 7.31 seconds, while Brock Bishop finished fourth in 7.44. Jean Oldley finished sixth in 7.68 and Benedict Alfonso placed 10th in 7.93.
In the men’s 600 metres, veteran Silas Iyuke won by four-hundredths of a second with a time of 1:29.91.
The Trojans also placed second in the women’s 4x200-metre relay in 1:58.66. Fallows, Natalie Gervitz, Vega and Wiebe competed in the event.
Nathan Woyessa won the men’s 1,500 metres, finishing 16 seconds ahead of the runner-up in 4:06.76.
Fallows added another victory in the women’s 300 metres, crossing the line in 42.24 seconds.
In the men’s 300 metres, Bishop placed third, Iyuke fifth, Oldley sixth, Sonom ninth and Alfonso 12th.
In the final event of the day, the Trojans won the men’s 4x400-metre relay. Bishop, Iyuke, Alexei Fadeyiw and Woyessa ran for SAIT.
The ACAC indoor track championships are scheduled for March 7-8 at the Kinsmen Sports Centre in Edmonton.
Strong week for Trojans esports
The SAIT Trojans esports teams were back in action this week, competing in multiple matches across several games.
SAIT Academy opened competition in League of Legends 5v5 on March 3. In its first match at 7 p.m., the Trojans defeated Albright 1-0 before falling 1-0 to PFW Mastodon League Gold at 8:45 p.m.
SAIT Varsity also competed in League of Legends 5v5 with two matches Tuesday. The Trojans defeated GMU LoL Academy 1-0 in their opener at 7 p.m., then beat WKU Hilltoppers Black 1-0. The wins move SAIT into a tie for second place in the Varsity Plus Swiss standings with a 6-2 record.
The Trojans Overwatch Academy team earned two victories, defeating Idaho State Bengals Orange 2-1 on March 2 and Northeast State Bears OW2 2-1 to improve to 4-4.
The SAIT Overwatch varsity team also secured two wins, defeating WVWC Overwatch and Florida Tech Black on March 2 to move to 5-2 in the standings.
In NACE Rocket League, the Trojans varsity team split its matches Tuesday. SAIT dropped a 2-1 decision to Lesley University before earning a 2-0 win over Hill College.
With the split, the Trojans varsity Rocket League team sits 26th in the standings with a 4-4 record.
